Letter to the Editor:

On chapter 3 of Education and Capitalism, “Linguistic Justice at School,” Jeff Bale was thorough on his explanation of the history of the fight between immigrants and non-immigrants in relation to having or not bilingual education in schools of the US. While this information is useful for our understanding of the politics behind this issue, there is an essential part of it that was not covered: the benefits that bilingualism can bring to ALL individuals in the country. Instead of giving a war-like approach to the question, it would be very informative for us readers to acknowledge that having bilingual education should not be seen as a threat to Americans’ nationalism. On the contrary, it will improve education standards, and prepare the children to be more successful in life and on their jobs. If only we could perceive the benefits of bilingualism for children, be it in the US or in any other country in the world, we would certainly see this subject through a different lens. When Americans start viewing it as something extremely positive, rather than a loss, bilingualism will be transformed in a matter of honor – since Americans are not willing to stay behind when it comes to education.
It is in their first 10 years that children are more susceptible to internalize new concepts. It is the most important stage of our lives for learning languages. The earlier they learn another language, the more likely they are to speak fluently. Acquiring a second or third language will not delay or confuse the child’s learning process. Nor will it be advantageous for a child to stop speaking their native language. “In fact, the abrupt end of the use of the home language by a child's parents may lead to great emotional and psychological difficulties both for the parents and for the child. After all, language is strongly linked to emotion, affect, and identity.” (CAL – Center for Applied Linguistics) This can lead a child to feel emotionally abandoned, totally lost, besides being a risk of having the child exhibit troubling behavior. Another good aspect of learning more languages is that once a child learns one language, it is easier for this child to learn a second one. Because languages are very complex, they require a strong structure for apprentice. Thus, schools are the correct source for children’s learning a second language.
According to the article “Why Bilinguals are Smarter,” on The New York Times, bilingualism is not only good for conversational purposes in a globalized world, it turns out to make people smarter. “It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age.” Bilingual children can solve certain kinds of puzzles more easily than monolingual children. Bilinguals are better at planning, solving problems, staying focused, switching attention while holding information in their minds, and monitoring the environment. Bilingualism influences children and adults as well. The higher their proficiency in other language, the more resistant they are to onsets of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The more they know, the later these illnesses appear to them.
In conclusion, there is no need for immigrants and non-immigrants to fight for something that will be beneficial to both, given the motives cited above. Hopefully this acknowledgement will be clearer each day, here in America, for bilingualism improves students’ cognition, creativity, and academic skills. Furthermore, “a multilingual workforce enhances America’s economic competitiveness abroad, helps maintain our political and security interests, and promotes tolerance and intercultural awareness.” (Marcos & Peyton 2000) Bilingualism is definitely good for America, and we must be aware of its importance. Let’s not lag behind!

Tupac- "Changes"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nay31hvEvrY
Issue: Racism, Violence, Injustice, Gangs; This song is about the hardships of African- American people, especially police violence against them as well as violence against each other. Let's change the way we eat, change the way we live, and change the way we treat each other."
