COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DAY
During our class period you are to complete two of the activities listed below. All items must be posted on our class website/blog by Friday @ noon. Instructions are below.  We will not be meeting in class today as you have a “field trip” to complete these activities.

This is an exercise in community building, information gathering and learning to navigate the system that we live in.
NOTE: Turn in all assignments to the faculty drop box outside of ADM 101.

1)   Write a 500-word (minimum) letter to the editor about a political issue that is relevant to our class.  See the format below. Post this on the class blog by Friday @ noon.
2)   Ask 5 (new) people about their perspectives and experiences regarding race, gender, sexuality, ageism, classism (and other forms of difference). Write their responses down in your notes. With these responses write poetry to tell their stories. Be creative in your efforts to seek justice! Post this on the class blog by Friday @ noon.
3)   Organize yourself a at least two other students. By using your bodies, and with some agility, make a heart shape, peace sign (or any other positive symbol) with your body in a public place (campus or community). Notice people’s reactions. Take a picture of what you did. Email it to me Crystallee.crain@gmail.com. SUBJECT LINE: Picture/Community Engagement Day.
4)   Make a 1-minute video with your VOICE! State your views about a political or social issue, tell us about the issue and what your opinions are about probable solutions. Your views expressed must include reliable (news or academic) sources. For Example – “The Mayday March inspired people all over the country to stand up for workers rights. The LA times reported that countries all over the world celebrated workers rights and the right for just employment and respect for all people.”  Email it to me Crystallee.crain@gmail.com. SUBJECT LINE: Video/Community Engagement Day.
5)   Research your city, school, county or state representatives. Create a detailed contact list include their 1) position,  2) committees and 3) political party/other affiliations. Post this on the class blog by Friday @ noon.
6)   Everybody loves Youtube music videos! Music has been a point of inspiration for many people around the world. Music gives us a translatable method to display our feelings. Find 5 (minimum) music videos that relate to different political issues. Post the link to the video and the issue that it relates to on our class blog. Sharing this music can help educate people on issues and ideas that may not be easily expressed.
(Example: Lupe Fiasco – Words I never Said/ www.youtube.com/watch?v=22l1sf5JZD0 / Issue: Complacency, Racism, Bullying)

dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip – Letter from God to Man / http://youtu.be/e4467CI4y0M / Issues: Religion used to justify destruction and violence, war, depletion of natural resources

“So I'm writing to apologize for all the horrors committed in my name,
Although that was never what I intended,
I feel I should take my share of the blame.
All the good I tried to do was corrupted
when organised religion got into full swing,
What I thought were quite clear messages were taken to unusual extremes.
My teachings taken out of context to meet the agendas of others,
Interpretations taken to many different ways and hidden meanings discovered
It was You that invented bombs, and the fear that comes with them
And it was You that invented money, and the corrupt economic systems
You invented terms like just-war and terms like friendly fire
And it was You that didn't know
when to stop digging deeper, when to stop building higher
It was You that exhausted the resources I carefully laid out on this earth,
And it was You that even saw these
problems coming but accredited them little worth
It was You that used my teachings for your own personal gain
And it was You that committed such tragedies,
even though they were in my name

So I apologize for any mistakes I made, and when my words misconstrued
But this apology's to mother nature, cause I created you”

Brother Ali – Daylight / http://youtu.be/_AQJMjF6uco / Issues: Race, Internal cultural identities, imposed identities of race and culture

"So they ask me if I'm black or white, I'm neither
Race is a made up thing I don't believe in it
My genes tie me to those that despised me
Made a living killing the ones that inspired me
I ain't just talking about singing and dancing
I was taught life and manhood by black men
So I'm a product of that understanding
And a small part of me feels like I am them
Does that make me a liar maybe
but I don't want the white folks that praise me to think they can claim me
'Cause you didn't make me"

Bruce Springsteen – 57 Channels (and Nothin’ On) / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVv70Dwsim8 / Issues: Consumerism, materialism, mass media used to divert attention and manipulate the public

“I bought a bourgeois house in the Hollywood hills
With a truckload of hundred thousand dollar bills
Man came by to hook up my cable TV
We settled in for the night my baby and me
We switched 'round and 'round 'til half-past dawn
There was fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
So I bought a .44 magnum it was solid steel cast
And in the blessed name of Elvis well I just let it blast
'Til my TV lay in pieces there at my feet
And they busted me for disturbin' the almighty peace
Judge said "What you got in your defense son?"
"Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
I can see by your eyes friend you're just about gone
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on...
Fifty-seven channels and nothin'”

Macklemore – White Privilege / http://youtu.be/gdVRlM-kSx8 / Issues: Institutionalized racism, cultural appropriation, commodification of identity

“So scared to acknowledge the benefits of our white privilege
‘cause it's human nature to want to be part of something different
especially when your ancestors are European Christians
and most whites don't want to acknowledge this is occurring
‘cause we got the best deal, the music without the burden
of being black in a system that really wants you to rock
‘cause all you need is a program and you can go and make hip-hop
and we hate the mainstream cause we're the ones that took it
now we listen to Aesop Rock and wear t-shirts that say Brooklyn
but it's not about black and white right
I mean good music is good music regardless of what you look like
but when you don't give them props isn't that selfish?
that's like saying rock was actually started by Elvis
so where does this leave me?

See I was put in the position where I could chose my options
blessed with the privilege that my parent's could send me to college
now who's going to shows the kids on the block starving
or the white people with dough that can relate to my content?
marketed the music now adapted to the lifestyle
what happened to jazz and rock and roll is happening right now
where's my place in the music that's been taken by the media
with white corporations controlling what they’re feeding ya?”

Mos Def – Mathematics / http://youtu.be/m5vw4ajnWGA / Issues: Decline of civil liberties/rights, state-sanctioned violence, surveillance, prison industrial complex, institutionalized racism, structural poverty

“Young soldiers trying to earn their next stripe
When the average minimum wage is $5.15
You best believe you've got to find a new grind to get C.R.E.A.M
The white unemployment rate? It's nearly more than triple for black
Some front-liners got their gun in your back
Bubbling crack, jewel theft and robbery to combat poverty
And end up in the global jail economy
Stiffer stipula

The last chunk got cut off:

"Stiffer stipulations attached to each sentence
Budget cutbacks but increased police presence
And even if you get out of prison still living
Join the other 5 million under state supervision
This is business: no faces, just lines and statistics
From your phone, your zip code to S-S-I digits
The system break man, child, and women into figures
2 columns for "who is" and "who ain't niggas"
Numbers is hard and real and they never have feelings
But you push too hard, even numbers got limits
Why did one straw break the camel's back? Here's the secret:
The million other straws underneath it: it's all mathematics”

This song means to love yourself for who you are, and that it doesn't matter if you're black or white, boy or girl, straight, gay or lesbian. You need to except the fact that you are beautiful in YOUR way.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV1FrqwZyKw

This song is about how kids are being taught that compassion is a weakness and desensitized by violent images seen in the media.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxziFMyRwDg

This track symbolizes a cry to free ourselves of all hate and confusion, and was inspired to motivate us all to seek out the things that would improve our souls and love for man. Marley is trying to say that we have one life, and that it is too short to waste on worrying about unimportant things of the world. The message is to focus on the things that really matter like peace, love, and family. Part of this song was from the 1937 speech from black rights activist Marcus Garvey was used as inspiration for Marley to signify African redemption “We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because while others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind,” hence the title redemption.

This song is a tribute to Barack Obama's election campaign. It goes deep into the history of the racial tension in the United States. William establishes Obama as Americas hope and symbol of a righteous cause and fulfillment needed. This song signifies hope, unity, and change.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOfMpetm8X8

This song was an open letter from Pink to the then US President George Bush. Her moving lyrics are primarily focused on Bush’s then policies and the resulting suffering of many Americans.
http://youtu.be/ITZZ6-qCYIE

This song is saying society needs to act as "one tribe". They need to see past our differences.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5C6c5S0ft0

This song is about women asserting their position as independent women and rejecting being a man’s property.

2) 5 peoples thoughts into a poem. I did my best p:

Race is something we choose to see
Whether or not it affects us is what it is to me
Either your eyes are open or your eyes are shut
But it doesn’t always work to say something uncut
You see we are forced to feel a certain way
How to deal and how to convey
Now a day’s you’d think we would be kind
Instead I’m amazed of how we are so confined and blind
Man or Woman, Girl or Boy, Gay or Straight
Who chooses what you become is not up to them, but up to you
And yet I find myself in a world…
In a world where people are being tricked into believing something is not right and having their minds swirled
Like a hurricane in the brain enough to drive any real person insane
How I sit and watch is just too painful, but when I stand up and act I see my downfall
We all agree that this should stop, but like with the rain, all I see are drops
Peoples tears and anguish, being separated into classes for the benefit of what?
For the convenience of a statistic or for a budget cut
However, I find when we need to speak all we can do is sit in our own silence
Bathe in what others have to say, but we can’t mutter a word, oh how we betray
It would be something if we could all hold hands and hug
All colors, all sexes, all classes alike
The dreams I dream, the things I see, the way I act, the way I flee
Let’s do something, but not now.
Let’s do something, but not now..
Let’s do something, but not now…
When will we do something, when will we fight
Must more people in die in order for us to see light?
I’m confused on what to do, what he said, what she said, all apply too
That’s life shit happens is a common phrase and such a cliché
There’s nothing I can do, I’m just one person, there’s nothing I can do but watch it worsen
Don’t look at me I have no answers, don’t ask me questions
That is all I have, questions
When will they be answered?
