1) Michael Jackson- Heal the World
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWf-eARnf6U
Issue: This song encourages us rising up as a people and helping those in need. Michael Jackson encourages people to love, and help needy children in the world. Jackson references helping others as it is the godly thing to do because we live on his earth. Jackson looks at the world as brothers and family that we need to help one another in order to survive. He doesn’t say do these things for you, but do this for the entire race. If everyone took Jacksons approach, the economy would be a better place. There would be no homeless, no staving children, nothing but love and care. Lack of this is in my opinion why the world is at war; we do nothing but hate one another.

2) Black eyed Peas- Where is the Love
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpYeekQkAdc
Issue: This song talks about world peace and the many problems the world faces. Discrimination, terrorism, war, and child soldiers. This song blames the media for its encouragement of the above situations. The song explains how people live as though they never receiver any home training and how the world is very uncaring. The U.S. gangs and KKK are just adding to the hate and causing further violence. Most of these issues have to do with the economy; people steal and kill mostly over money. The media favors certain races causing others to adopt discrimination. The chorus is a plea for help from god of this dying world and for a better tomorrow accompanied by love.

3) Marvin Gaye- What’s Going On?
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD78i6eoGkM
Issues: This song was written from stories that were told by brother Frankie after he came back from the Vietnam War. This song reaches to many aspects of the world; Gaye questions what this world is coming to. There were a lot of people dying in that war, in which Gaye mentions the importance of love in this song and that love conquers hate.

4) The O'Jays- For the Love of Money
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll3uipTO-4A
Issue: This relates to politics because this song describes how the love of money leads to crime and betrayal. The government and societies strong label they put on the importance of money leads many people to do negative things to get money. Seeing as through many say “ Money makes the world go around”, money is the root of all evil due to the importance society puts on money. Money causes deaths, complications, wars, crime, and dishonesty. The importance placed on money has caused our women to see their own bodies for it. Money has not made our society…were in complete debt. Look at all its caused to this society.

5) Public Enemy- Fight The Power
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WHe5fxS3dA
Issue: Fight the power was the most succinct statement of African American alienation every taped in history. This song was defiantly made as a statement to everyone trying to bring down the African American race, saying “fight the power” encouraging black power. This group pointed out people like Elvis and relating to him as racist and one of the rappers saying “he never meant sh*t to me”. This video was an attempt to raise black power awareness and pride, considering the many referrals towards racism and the many referrals towards groups like The Black Panthers. This video relates to the politics through its obvious display of actions against racism and the crowds feeling of slavery and oppression.

Audra Stance Community Engagement Week"

In "Community Engagement Week", I choose #5. I researched my City Representatives and I found it to be the Mayor of Oakland,Jean Quan. Jean Quan was born in Livermoore on October 21, 1949. Quan's family history in the Bay Area stretches back to the 1870's, when her great-grandfather left his village in Hoi Ping, China and landed in SF. Quan was taunted and teased growing up in her early years, so Quan found libraries and immersed herself in books.Quan became very strong in researching and reading on politics. Telling Jean Quan that she cant do something just makes her try harder to prove you wrong. Since dipping a toe into Oakland politics in 1989, simply as a parent trying to save the schools music and arts programs. Jean has strives to make public institutions work for people. She served on the Oakland Board of education for three terms, working with principals, parents, teachers and students to energize and improve public schools. She also ran for city council to bring this community based, grassroots approach to marshal, Oakland resources and to improve quality of life for all residents. Now mayor Quan makes history. Oakland celebrates the inauguration of Jean Quan as Oakland first woman and first Asian American mayor.

Everybody loves YouTube music videos! Music has been a point of inspiration for many people around the world. Find 5 (minimum) music videos that relate to different political issues. Post the link to the video and the issue that it relates to on our class blog. Sharing this music can help educate people on issues and ideas that may not be easily expressed. See the example below so you know what to post on the class blog. Post this on the class blog by Monday @ noon.
1. Pumped up Kicks by Foster The People.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDTZ7iX4vTQ
This song tells a story about a kid grabbing his father’s gun and using it. Foster the People have stated that they wrote this song for gun awareness and how it can affect the youth. As youth gun violence rampages continue to be an issue in this country there should be more awareness in finding these kids mental help instead of trying to outgun them.

2. American Idiot by Green Day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee_uujKuJMI
This is a song about how the media is taking control of the American people by producing phony stories. They were also upset how President Bush was reelected as people blindly listened to the propaganda. Green Day is basically calling Americans idiotic for being so trusting of the media.
3. Imagine by John Lennon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRhq-yO1KN8
“Imagine” is a song that is against the war, and issues in general. It’s about a world where everyone gets along and there are no problems whatsoever. This is a utopia by realistic standards almost seems impossible to reach. Wars have always been devastating to both sides since there are many deaths for an idea that isn’t worth a human’s life.
4. We Didn’t Start the Fire by Billy Joel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFTLKWw542g
This song’s lyrics include many issues that generations have faced. Those future generations will have to fix the problems of the past even though they had nothing to do with it. As a generation we inherit problems and must deal with them before they get worse.
5. Zombie by The Cranberries
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ejga4kJUts
This song is about post-traumatic stress disorder as soldiers continue to face these issues and have a tough time when they come back home. Many are left homeless as they can no longer work a job because they need help mentally.
