COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DAY
During our class period you are to complete two of the activities listed below. All items must be posted on our class website/blog by Friday @ noon. Instructions are below.  We will not be meeting in class today as you have a “field trip” to complete these activities.

This is an exercise in community building, information gathering and learning to navigate the system that we live in.
NOTE: Turn in all assignments to the faculty drop box outside of ADM 101.

1)   Write a 500-word (minimum) letter to the editor about a political issue that is relevant to our class.  See the format below. Post this on the class blog by Friday @ noon.
2)   Ask 5 (new) people about their perspectives and experiences regarding race, gender, sexuality, ageism, classism (and other forms of difference). Write their responses down in your notes. With these responses write poetry to tell their stories. Be creative in your efforts to seek justice! Post this on the class blog by Friday @ noon.
3)   Organize yourself a at least two other students. By using your bodies, and with some agility, make a heart shape, peace sign (or any other positive symbol) with your body in a public place (campus or community). Notice people’s reactions. Take a picture of what you did. Email it to me Crystallee.crain@gmail.com. SUBJECT LINE: Picture/Community Engagement Day.
4)   Make a 1-minute video with your VOICE! State your views about a political or social issue, tell us about the issue and what your opinions are about probable solutions. Your views expressed must include reliable (news or academic) sources. For Example – “The Mayday March inspired people all over the country to stand up for workers rights. The LA times reported that countries all over the world celebrated workers rights and the right for just employment and respect for all people.”  Email it to me Crystallee.crain@gmail.com. SUBJECT LINE: Video/Community Engagement Day.
5)   Research your city, school, county or state representatives. Create a detailed contact list include their 1) position,  2) committees and 3) political party/other affiliations. Post this on the class blog by Friday @ noon.
6)   Everybody loves Youtube music videos! Music has been a point of inspiration for many people around the world. Music gives us a translatable method to display our feelings. Find 5 (minimum) music videos that relate to different political issues. Post the link to the video and the issue that it relates to on our class blog. Sharing this music can help educate people on issues and ideas that may not be easily expressed.
(Example: Lupe Fiasco – Words I never Said/ www.youtube.com/watch?v=22l1sf5JZD0 / Issue: Complacency, Racism, Bullying)

Dear Editor,

The war over abortion has been going on for a long time and I think it is time to put an end to it. Though I can see a person of Pro-Life’s point, the choice of abortion should not be taken away from a woman. Though some say this is true, and it is in some cases, abortion is not the only other form of contraception. A woman knows what she is doing when she makes her choice for abortion; she knows the risks and the doctors, as well, make sure a woman knows those risks. So if, even after being informed, a female wants to go through with her decision to abort her child, who are we to stop her?
Many people use adoption as an alternative to abortion but adoption has its problem as well. There may be many people waiting to adopt, but what about the children who don’t get adopted? I have a Coach who has worked with kids in foster homes, and he has a 3 year old daughter. I asked him to think from his wife’s standpoint and answer my question. The question was: if there had been a moment in their lives where they could not keep the baby, for whatever reason, would they have an abortion or give up the baby to adoption? His reply was that they would have had an abortion because he has seen what happens in foster homes. The kids who get adopted and sent into nice homes, they are the lucky ones, but the rest are left with a tough life and not all of them make it. Another thing that adoption agencies do is they put the kids with disabilities, or presumed disabilities, on a separate list and keep them in the foster care system so they can receive more money form the government. What kind of life is that for a child?
Abortion is not an easy thing, and personally, I wouldn’t get one unless I really had to. I can relate to people from Pro-Life, I believe a baby is born from the moment it is conceived, not three months after. But unlike Pro-Life, I believe there are circumstances in which abortion would be the better option. One example I always use is to put one person in a woman’s place. Maybe she is getting an abortion because she has a family to take care of and the baby is putting her life on the line. Think about it, kids who grow up with single parents, both the parent and child have tough times. Would you really be willing to put your life on the line, with the chances of leaving your family behind to fend for themselves? I’m not saying that it is for sure the other parent will survive, you can’t control life, but the choice for abortion is something you can control. This is just one example; there can be many reasons as to why a woman decides to have an abortion. Another thing I would like for the other side to hear is about their religious views. It may be seen as murder, but who is one person from a one religion to say something to another person from another, or even the same religion? If you think it is wrong, so be it, leave the punishment part to God himself. If he thinks a woman having an abortion is wrong, I’m sure he’ll remind her of that, but a human should not tell another human how to live their life. I wouldn’t tell you what you can or can’t do, and I’m sure you would feel the same way. That is why I think we should put an end to all this fighting and just let it be. I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully, we will make some improvements.

Sincerely,
Rajvir Kaur

Life’s Inevitable Truths

They told her “ you two are from two different worlds, you’ll never work out”
Somebody should have told them love doesn’t have a class, that’s not what it’s about.
Love goes beyond gender, race, and class
Yet that’s forgotten when peoples’ mentalities clash

“you’re too young, we know how things should work,”
Have they never heard the saying that ‘elders don’t always know what’s best?’
What happened to the open mindedness, equal opportunities and the rest?

The unfairness goes past love, into our daily lives as well,
But most of the time we’re in a powerless state, so who do we tell?
Who do we complain to when somebody makes a comment about our skin or age, or class, saying “you don’t belong in a certain place?”

The answer is simple, we tell no one.
This ain’t Utopia, each one of is just trying to live and get through life, page after page.

Dear Editor,
I want to make petition you about abortion that is a controversial issue all the time in the world. Even though a lot of people have been a debate on abortion, it is indeterminable disputes a long time. Also, we do not know when this debate is going to be done. This issue is divided two opinions such as pro-life and pro-choice. The debaters fight with their opinions as woman’s rights versus bio ethics. Most pro-lifers insist that fetus is a new life with their opinion that is bio ethics so they say that abortion is murder, but most pro-choicers insist that the most important is woman’s rights. Nowadays, a trend to make light of human life and a corrupt of sex ethics are the common situation of the world. The abortion separates two parts such as abortus provocatus and abortus spontaneous. But people almost use word, abortion, like abortus provocatus. I think this issue is very difficult to decide which one is right. If I think about a new life, the abortion is an obliquitous act because the sanctity of fetus’ life is surely true and the moral of guideline is also important matter. However, if I think about woman’s rights, I do not oppose abortion stubbornly. People should face up to the reality and think about woman’s health, and medical ethics. In my opinion, the abortion is not only wrong way. For example, if teenagers have unwanted pregnant, they think abortion naturally. They cannot take care of their baby after they give birth. I mean that they are not able to bear a baby without ability of bringing their baby up. In this case, abortion can be the best way because we think about the baby’s life that is not born in normal family. Also, here is a woman who decides an abortion, and a fetus who is called a victim. Fetus? Fetus is just life in the placenta. This is not important technically. If people insist unborn fetus’ bio ethnic, the fetus is protected life. In that case, woman is just like womb and main agent of childbirth. Measure of low birth rate? Woman’s body is not a slave for nation. They have no power to decide the matter, just have womb of control abject. Of course people who do not want to get pregnant have to be careful when they have sex. But if it already happens the fact, the woman has to decide herself for her body. We need to know that nobody likes abortion, so nobody gets pregnant intentionally to do abortion. Some people say about sense of guilt, but the sense of guilt is also individual right.
According to http://www.reportworld.co.kr/report/data/view.html?no=580578, “people make abortion one time in 20 seconds, sixty hundred times in a day, one hundred fifty to two hundreds million times in a year in South Korea.” Of course I think that protected woman’s rights are most important but this is also very serious problem. The best way is careful always before people that do not want to get a baby, have pregnant. Thank you for reading.

Dear Editor,

I write this letter about political parties because the election is being on and people might want to know some information about how the election should be run and things behind it.
At the time our country was founded, the leaders had been afraid of political parties. Like someone stated that “George Washington is usually not listed as having a political party after his name. However if he talks like a Federalist he might just be a Federalist.” The political parties quickly formed because individuals want to connect with other individuals of similar opinion. “If you are a Democratic you probably do not want to go to supper every night with a table full of Republicans.” As a result, you tend to find other people having a similar mind like you. That is how political parties formed. Political Parties give voters a place to gather together to work for or against issues. Nowadays, political parties don’t have their strong power of shaping government like before. Now, candidates can do things by themselves. Because of that, modern political parties transform into service providers. TV advertising is the great tool used for the election and voting. Some people are amazed that money can help some having a job in government. They state that they don’t feel like they voted for the best people for the job. Candidate can use TV advertising to convince people to vote for them. People don't have the time to get involved like they used to, and they rely upon the TV to provide them the basic information. Candidates with no the money to have their advertisements on TV are rarely noticed. They who have the most money will wins. Political parties also try to combine their ideas into other parties or tend to absorb different parties if they can. Usually when a third party is created, it is on the horizon only a short time because it is usually around a single issue. Then one or the other major political party will absorb the issue and the third party will go away. The political parties also help to raise money that they provide to campaigns they suppose have a probability to win or ones where they need to make a statement. We speak about a two party system in this country, and at a quick look, that's all we observe, however if you look deeper there are all types of factions among these parties trying to influence the direction and the National Party. That is because the nation parties will set policy, a minimum that it wants to accomplish in a given two year rotation. They will also assist a sitting President with staffing, not just with the main positions, like Secretary of Defense, but all the minor positions, like US Attorneys, Asst. They accomplish this by identifying rising stars within the party, people who have good speaking abilities, and eagerness towards the party's ideals. “Bill Clinton was a member of The Democratic Leadership Council, they are a fiscally conservative wing of the Democratic Party,” and “George Bush's staff is drawn from the Neo-consevatives, they have a think tank called The American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy.” In the two-party system, third party candidates rarely are elected. So, the candidates tend to be nominated by the Republican or Democratic Party to have seat in office. In fact, the race to be nominated is as important as the race to be elected. Someone state “Obama was nominated the race cooled off a little, more people were interested in the issue of which Democrat would be nominated. The same can be said for the Republican party. The nomination process was hard and many candidates fell to the wayside before the election race even started.” The less supported candidates by the primary election system will face the tough road to nominate. Here party members decide which nominated candidate will represent their party.
