Race
Knowing your own race is more than looking at people that look similar to you
It’s being a part of and knowing how people unite
Whether you’re asian, black, or white
It’s learning to speak their language even if you didn’t learn as a kid
Following the things they do and the things your ancestors did
Race is not everything but it plays a substantial part
Keeping your people close to your heart
Discrimination is what some people sadly face
It does not matter the color of your race
Ignore those that never liked you, just never lose your faith.

Gender
I will never surrender to the opposite gender
I am who I am, that what god decided
I am not less of a person
And I will let you know that for certain
I work just as hard as they do
So why compare me to you
We are not the same but yet we are
Like an actress or a planet
We are both still stars
No girl or boy has a life that’s better
We can’t decide who we will be, just like the weather
We are all equal
And if it wasn’t for opposite sexes, there would be no sequel.

Sexuality
Why does it matter if I’m gay or straight?
Why do others look at me with a face full of hate?
Why does it matter if we’re different or the same?
Why must you take my well being down to shame?
I did not choose this life for it chose me
Why make me pay for life, for I thought it was free?
I wish you can like me for being me
Sex doesn’t matter we are all unique
I am proud of who I am, acceptance is all I seek

AGEISM
How can one judge me off how old I am?
Telling me I can’t do something when I know I can
So you know a little more about history
How does that make you any better than me
Just because I’m old or young
Does not mean that I am dumb
Yes the young drives fast
And the old drives slow
But the old was once young
And the young will still grow

Classism
What makes the rich better than the poor?
Why is money the only thing we seem to adore?
Instead of helping each other they slam their doors
For everything we do we get put in a class
The poor will never come first since they’re always last
Having the newest things doesn’t make you a step ahead
It’s what you offer to others that they can value instead
Class is just another word to separate us people from one another
As long as you’re happy money wont even matter.

I want to talk about gun control, because recently more and more shooting incident happened in school. Gun control is a big issue in U.S for long time. Some people think the people cannot have gun, in contrast the others people think people can have gun. In my opinion, I think people should not have gun. However, both of them have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of government allow people has gun is that people can use gun to protect themselves and during the peaceful time, own the gun reflect that this country has more human right than others. The disadvantage of owning the guns is that it will increase the crime, people will have no ensure for their safety.
In my opinion, I think people should not have right to own the guns, because the gun is very dangerous staff in our society. Some people may control them to use gun correctly, but no one can ensure that everyone can use gun correctly. If less people can't control their gun, the consequence will be very serious. For example, a person kills his classmate and teacher in 2007 in Virginia. If the gun don’t allow on campus, maybe it won't happen. I think since the gun can harm us safety, the government should not allow people keep the gun completely.

a) Court decisions related to gun control
The first restrictions concerned the manner in which citizens could carry arms. In 1850, the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that the foundation did not grant the right to carry a concealed weapon although earlier court cases had ruled that the constitution did protect the right to carry concealed weapons. Shortly before the Civil War, some southern States passed legislation denying slaves and freed blacks the right to possess firearms."

b) How does the constitution relate to gun control?
Second Amendment
It states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." See U.S. Constitution

c) Public opinion on gun control
In my opinion, gun should be banned, because the gun is the dangerous weapon. In article 1, there are some data shows gun threaten our safety, even though some people still support people should have the gun. I think most people prefer ban people have gun, but some liberals still support people could have gun. Those people agree with people have gun, because they think U.S is democratic country and people should have human right. Even though U.S is democratic country, it doesn't reflect in gun right because it can threaten our safety.
I choose two articles from the New York Time and Wall Street Journal. First article talks about the nation’s police chiefs are finding an alarming increase in criminals’ use of assault weapons. The government concern about public safety. After 10-year ban expired in 2004, even though the presidential nominees care about this case, congress didn’t notice this problem which exists. Many local police chiefs notice the 37 percent reporting an increase in assault weapons in street crime. The Miami police report after ban expire homicides by assault weapons increased six fold, including the murder of two police officers. According to investigation, a large number of crime that used by gun in Washington, but the capital ruling class ignore it. On the other hand, no one care about the gun control legislation in congress or Obama groups. However, some chiefs are very serious to find the solution.
The second article from the wall street journal talks about a Supreme Court argument on gun rights was criticized between conservatives and liberals for next month. The court will make decision for state restrict handguns that blocked by the Constitution. The Supreme Court will hear arguments over that question in challenges to handgun bans in Chicago. The liberal and conservative have different opinions in the gun control issue. The conservative wants to restrict the gun right in contrast the liberal wants to free gun right which has no restriction. And The National Rifle Association also wants to challenge Illinois gun laws. It also talk about that before the Civil War, courts held that the Bill of Rights limited only federal powers, permitting states to impose greater restrictions on their residents. And this article includes a map which shows the restrictiveness of gun laws.

“White America” by Eminem is political song about how the people of the United States love him because he is white. Eminem makes it seem that the reason he is so popular is because he looks more like them and not like a minority. Americans listen to Eminem more because he looks like the people buying the music. He mentions in the song that he gets attention from white Americans and so now the U.S. government has made his music a menaces to the people who listen to it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZIzD0ZfTFg

The song by Nas featuring Lauryn Hill called “If I Ruled The World,” is a political song that points out the poverty in the United States and the way minorities are treated. Nas says if he had his way he would get the men out of prison and send them back to Africa. This song points out what it would be like if the world was under his control and how much better it would be.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZIzD0ZfTFg

“Fight The Power” by Public Enemy is another political song. The title in itself tells what the song is all about. In the video you can see men in the crowd wearing all black with black shades resembling the activists in the civil rights movement. There are also people holding up banners and pictures of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This is a strong and very intense political song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PaoLy7PHwk

“Fuck The Police” by N.W.A. is a highly charged and explicit song about the police and how they mistreat minorities. In this song Ice Cube says, “they have the authority to kill the minority,” which depicts the police as people who misuse their position to hurt the people they are suppose to protect.N.W.A. make the police look very corrupt and unjust in the way they handle minorities.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51t1OsPSdBc

“Killing In The Name” by Rage Against The Machine is another really strong political song. This song also mentions the police and how they also use their authority to oppress the people they are suppose to protect. The front man explicitly says that he will not do what they want him to do. It is fair to say that he will go against the grain and not do what the government or anyone else would have him do. This song is charged up and exudes tons of energy to the listener and making it a very powerful song.

Brad Paisley, Accidental Racist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSurzeGvPrQ <-- this song created a lot of controversy as he sings about being a white man living in the South and being proud of the Confederates; it’s a good teaching tool as it serves as an example of systemic racism.

Macklemore, White Privilege: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INNCxVpGpyU <-- He sings about being a white rapper and how he is more privileged because of the color of his skin even though white people don’t want to admit it, he sees the advantages that he has.

Rise Against, Hero of War: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DboMAghWcA <--- I think that this relates to the poll about the war at the beginning of class and also can be related to public opinion and democracy. At first the war after the terrorist attacks was popular and young men and women eagerly signed up to fight in honor of the USA but the singer then describes the atrocities of war as the young soldier who volunteered begins to question what is being done but continues to fight because all he ‘trusts’ is his country, his flag, his homeland. He also challenges the ‘hero’ status he has in the public’s eyes and the meaning of superficial medals and awards.

Madonna, Material Girl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0k3GTW3ecvo <-- Pretty self-explanatory by the title but this song talks about the materialism of society and she says she is a ‘material girl’, she’s been brainwashed into the culture and greed of capitalism which seeks profits and very little else matters.

Depeche Mode, People Are People: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZWw6pbqmfk <-- Trying to make sense of racism and how people can be so cruel to those that are different. This song also touches on the discrimination against homosexuals and religious intolerance.

Letter to the editor:

Despite the American democratic institution and the centuries old tradition in democratic governance, the American society is still marked by an un-equal representation of women on the political spectrum.

The essence of democracy is the ability of the state to conduct fair, equal, and free elections. At the same time though it is crucial for the democratic system that all groups be represented according to the same applied algorithm. Moreover, it is essential for women to be given the same rights as men in a society that vouches for equality between men and women. Yet, despite these arguments, there are far too few women in the upper parts of the political scheme in the United States. Compared to other countries, there have been dramatic improvements; yet, particularly because the United States prides itself with the democratic legacy and its exercise, more needs to be done in order to achieve a higher rate of participation and representation of women at the elite level of the political system.

According to statistics, “when the 112th Congress convened in January 2011, 84 percent of its members were men.” (Lawless and Fox, 2012) Therefore, the percentage of women in the Congress is of 16. Sources from the World Bank place this ratio to 83:17, with a constant since 2008 (World Bank, 2012). By comparison, “90 nations now surpass the U.S. in the percentage of women in the national legislature” (Lawless and Fox, 2012) European countries such as France or Germany far surpass this percentage, with ratios of 73:27 and 67:33 respectively. In this sense, it is rather worrisome to consider that the “old European democracies” that have along their history been subjected to oppressive regimes, authoritarian rules, and power voids have better representation of women in their national parliaments than the United States that is considered to be the example of democratic principles and institutions.

The representation of women at the top levels of politics is important not necessarily for the statistics but rather for the added value that can be brought by the presence of women in decision-making bodies. It is rather a well-known fact that women have a tendency to address politics from a different perspective and a different orientation. Studies have shown that women are more reluctant to consider politics as an environment of constant fierce competition and focus more on the compromising and negotiation part of resolution (Lawless and Fox, 2012). At the same time, there are certain aspects of the political life women see differently. Some examples include childcare and household tasks simply because women are more prone to being part of these activities than men. Therefore, the take of women in high profile politics may be important because it may help provide a different perspective that that of male candidates or seat occupants.

Despite the fact that the gap between men and women at the level of the national legislative is rather big, some improvements are visible at the state and local politics. In this sense, the percentage of women in state and local politics is somewhat higher than at the national level (Lawless and Fox, 2012). This situation is not aimed at pointing out a less competitive elections environment at the local or regional level but rather to underline the fact that in general, women when choosing to vote, are likely to be equal candidates to men. However, this situation is a matter of choice that is determined in its turn by factors such as self perception or perception of the campaign environment. More precisely, one reason for which women are not represented in the national legislative is also the fact that they most often refuse to be part of the campaigns running to those elections. This in turn is due to a lower self-esteem and adaptability to tougher elections campaigns conditions.

Overall, it is important to underline the fact that women in the United States are un-represented at the level of national legislature. Compared to other European countries, the US lacks behind with an unsatisfying ration between men and women. Although the situation is far from being positive at the local and state level, in the lower parts of the legislative, women are better represented. One reason however for the poor representation of women in national legislative may be that women have different perspectives on election campaigns and public office that often determines them to choose not to run for office.

This is my attempt on option number two. I tried my best to making it interesting or at least rhyme. It's not Dr. Seuss but hey, I did what I could!

(I interviewed students that attended De Anza College and interviewed three guys and two girls about their experience and perspective on specifically gender differences.)

"Gender Differences"

Males and Females,
Are they equals?
Let's see what my interview unveils,
between these two labels.

The guys said,
"There are two big differences,
from they're feet to they're foreheads.
to they're thoughts and they're businesses."

The difference in the physical and emotional,
was the focus of the guys' perspectives.
It's unequal but they hope it becomes mutual,
so that the two are both supportive.

As for the girls, they believed,
equality is getting better,
but it is not completely achieved.

"The boys have more privileges," one explained,
"They earn more money too.
Even after all the changes, inequality still remained."

All in all, both genders agreed,
that equality between them is getting better,
but not completely buried.

The student's opinions were either mutual or strong,
one student believed men will always be in powers,
and one student thought he was most definitely wrong.

Personal experiences also definitely took importance,
but ultimately all students hoped,
that eventually the battle of the sexes will come to a balance.

Why am I excluded?
Who gets to choose the rules?
I want something old and something new

I asked an old man about his love
He described his lovely wife
I asked an old man about my love
He said he did not approve of my life

Why am I excluded?
Oppressed by the ignorant fools.
I want something borrowed and something blue

I asked a young lady about her dream wedding
She painted a brilliant picture filled with white doves
I asked a young lady about my dream wedding
She painted a picture of hell with me and my love

How am I different?
My love is the same
So why am I persecuted?
Who’s really to blame?

I went to class to ask my teacher
He said whatever makes you happy
He wanted to introduce me to his preacher
Because his church would accept me

Now my heart stands proud
I feel hope in the air
I yell and scream aloud
One day it will all be fair

I found a new friend
He said he would love to see
A love that will last till the end
I told him to believe in me

Word on the vine spreads
Times they are a changing
Now we’re turning heads

At last it comes to a halt
The innocent youth shows hope
As long as we move on with no fault
Marriage for all within our scope

From my responses I feel I’ll be okay
One step, one mile, progress is made
For my love is no different, even if I am gay

Poem.
