Dear Editor,
In 1963 Martin Luther King Junior made a speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial with the hopes of abolishing segregation and creating equal rights for all Americans. In his speech King mentions that he hopes someday people will be judged by the content of their character as oppose to the color of their skin. I am writing today to tell you that a very large group of people in America are still not being judge by the content of the character.

Here we are, 49 years later facing this same injustice and inequality. In today’s society, two homosexual men who are deeply in love cannot get married in most states due to a law created by the government; whereas Kim Kardashian can get married to someone she barely knew and then divorce him 73 days later. This fact is heart wrenching and infuriating. How can someone decide for another human being whether they have the right marry someone else, especially in a world where heterosexual couples take advantage of the their marriage rights? Today, in the year 2012 we are facing the same discrimination and bias that the U.S faced during the civil rights movement in the 1960’s. It is time that America realizes that people are people. We have come so far and no longer judge people based on their race or gender and now we must come one step further in our level of understanding.
Furthermore, in three states today, (Florida, Mississippi, and Utah), homosexual couples are not able to legally adopt children. This is said to be due to the fact that children would not have a proper upbringing without the presence of both a man and woman in their lives. However, I ask you, are there not single parents in the world? Do children not get raised by a mother and a grandmother? Ultimately what this comes down to is pure discrimination caused by different opinions. It is inhumane and unjustifiable to not allow homosexual couples the right to adopt a child, as they can provide just as loving and safe of an environment as a heterosexual couple can provide. I am shocked at America for such behavior and lack of understanding. To add to this, in the state of Michigan, only single homosexual people are allowed to adopt children. This proves that the laws are discriminatory by showing us that Michigan does not want children being brought up with differing ideas of a couple or of love. It aggravates me to think of all the children who long for homes and the amount of homosexual couples out there wishing for a child to love.

Overall, until our society can accept homosexual couples as equals and completely accept and understand them, we cannot move forward. No one should be told how to live their life and be given restrictions from people who are not affected by their choices. I sincerely hope that the bold words of President Barack Obama will be a turning point for this country; however I fear that even he cannot alter the stubborn minds of Americans. This country cannot continue like this and some major changes need to be made in order for us to truly be “The Land of the Free”.

Thank you,
Pati Shojaee

Who are our county representatives? (Santa Clara County)

The system in California can be confusing at times. Especially when it comes to voicing concerns in regards to a certain county. This is due to the “bicameral” system and because of it there are layers upon layers of representation that can often cross into the same borders. On three separate layers we have representatives in the state government that could affect policies being implemented within the County of Santa Clara. These include; Congressional districts, State districts and State Assembly districts.

In 2010, the state government decided to redistrict the California map and on the week of July 24th, 2011 final lines were drawn. On July 12th, 2012 however, Republic party officials backed the need to resurface the Proposition 40 legislative bond act passed in 2002. In the case of a “no” vote new lines will be drawn and the County of Santa Clara would fall under new Congressional, Senate and Assembly districts. For now (let’s keep our fingers crossed) Santa Clara falls under the 2011 lines.

Santa Clara County (Representative tree) Effective July, 2011 following the 2010 reappointment includes;
Congressional Districts; 17, 18, 19 and 20
Senatorial Districts; 10, 13, 15 and 17
Assembly Districts; 24, 25, 27, 28, 29 and 30

Within the Santa Clara County lines are five Supervisory districts that implement the policies passed in votes by the State Government and “provide a venue for a comprehensive review of the major functional area of County Government”. There are five policy committees and in Santa Clara, the Board of Supervisors has a Legislative Committee that looks over issues affecting the county. These five supervisors alongside the County Assessor, District Attorney and County Sheriff are in charge of serving the county; “planning for the needs of a dynamic community, providing quality services and promoting a healthy safe and prosperous community for all”
Elected officials of Santa Clara Supervisory Districts;

District 1Supervisor: Mike Wasserman
