Download and print off the Community Based Organization worksheet. Use this worksheet to develop a list of potential project consultants for your work.

Bring this COMPLETED during our week 4 in person session. Be prepared to discuss this when we meet.

For this units blog post you are asked to do the following:
1) Identify an ally on campus who can support your ideas and project development.
2) Research other individuals and community based organizations that can be a resource for you during your project. (bring to small group meeting next week)
3) Describe your idea in more depth and ask questions in the prompt below regarding what your next steps should be.
4) In this post - describe the following:

  •     Explain why your idea may or may not meet a current gap or need in that area of interest,
  •     Describe any concerns you  may have about your idea and how you may address them,
  •     Describe the type of mentor you want to help you develop your project, what do you need them to do or     be like.

For my project, I am going to start a flow arts and gloving club on campus. Flow arts is dancing with various props including hula hoops, poi, fire fans, etc. This club will provide a creative learning and jam space where people can teach each other new tricks, or people can come to have a good time dancing to music. For the actual club meetings, I am thinking of creating different workshops for hooping, poi, gloving, etc. People can split up and go to the workshop they wish to participate in. Also, I want to host a talent show near the end of the quarter, so people can showcase their talents and new moves they have learned! Hopefully, more experienced flow arts performers can come speak at the club and provide demonstrations. So far, I haven't heard of a flow arts club on campus, and I know people who would like to join. I don't know how many people on campus are interested in flow arts, but maybe this club will pique their interest!

On campus, there are several allies that can help me with my project. First of all, ICC (Interclub Council) encourages extracurricular activities on campus, and they are willing to help students start clubs! ICC will guide me in writing the club constitution, finding a club advisor, recruiting members, etc. In addition, the creative arts department at De Anza may be interested in my cause to start a flow arts (dance) and gloving club on campus. Teachers from this department may be willing to be the club advisor. As for the club advisor, I would like them to guide me to plan out lessons for the club meetings. How do the dance professors separate the time out during a class session? I hope that other club officers with successful clubs can shed some light on how to keep a club running smoothly.

Around the Bay Area, there are several organizations that are potential resources for my club. The Crucible, an industrial arts school in Oakland, provides lessons on fire play with hooping and poi. If possible, the club could get lessons or have some spokesperson from the school come talk to the club.

Some concerns I have are people not interested in attending club meetings, keeping the club organized and united, finding dedicated club officers, and having supplies to play with for people who do not have their own. I have attended club meetings that were extremely boring; members did not get to know each other, and the meeting was dry. I want to have fun club meetings, so I plan to have ice breakers in the beginning of each meeting to excite people. I need to develop my arsenal of fun activities! Also, I’ve heard of clubs falling apart because the executive board not being able to commit. Furthermore, I only hoop dance; I don’t do poi or gloving, and I need club members/officers to step up and help with that section of the club. Lastly, the club will need to fundraise to have funds to do other activities. I know that clubs can sell drinks at De Anza’s flea market, and they can keep the funds. There’s lots to do!

Hello! My overall goal is to keep daylight savings time all year round in California. That means no more adjusting clocks twice a year! For this quarter, I don't have enough time to start my petition. Instead, I'm using this academic term to schedule the things I need to do to make the petition, create a draft of the initiative, spread the message to as many people as possible before the start of the petition's circulating period, obtain a budget for campaigning, and find allies. On campus, Doctor Crain has my back!

I was thinking that my uncle can help me out because he works in Downtown San Jose. I asked my aunt if she can help spread the word because she speaks many people, but she's against my proposal. As of now, I think my uncle can help me. Also Patience can help me figure out some ideas on how to make a budget and how to communicate with people about my project. Petition2Congress.com has a petition online to end daylight savings time. I'm going to contact them tomorrow to see if they can help me out.

People opposing my proposal, like my aunt, say that having daylight savings time is good for kids walking to school. Energy companies may oppose this idea because activities outside don't necessarily need electricity, thus these companies are afraid of losing money.
However, other people believe it's more beneficial for us to keep a consistent time throughout the year. For one reason, no more adjustments means no more hassle changing our body clocks.

I need help to convince people opposing me like my aunt. Oh and I also need help with scheduling my to-do stuff on the monthly calendar I printed. I'm going to ask Doctor Crain and Patience how to talk to people like my aunt about it.

I want my mentor to be organized and strict. However, I'd like my mentor to have a sense of humor. I want my mentor to be personable too.

my ally on campus is my best buddy max cunningham who has worked hard in the social specturm of de anza to become a valubale member of the community. he is a representative for the de anza student body chamber and has become a valubale member in the clubs: students for social justice, and the green party here on campus. my friend max has placed himself in a valuable position to support my organization. the benefit of his new relationships is that when the website is launch these good intentioned organizations will be able to use direct their club members to our website in order to accomplish their goals. supplying HowDoWeChangeTheWorld.org with the valuable traffic of ambition individuals.

I have become a member of the Developers guild here on the de anza campus, as backend project manager or HDWCTW.org the developers guild will provide we with incredible experience working with developers with all kinds or backgrounds and a wealth of knowledge in web and mobile developement.

HDWCTW.org is a non-profit web based platform. our objective is the host meaning full discussions, studies, and events on a huge range of topics. HDWCTW.org aim to collect human opinions on all kinds of topics in order to aid indiviuduals who seek solutions to todays problems. these problems may range from a local to global basic. a few examples of topics we look forward to hosting will be the Keystone XL pipeline, The effectiveness of daylight savings, the right for homosexuals to marry(or recieve similar benefits), and allocation of government resources.

moving forward i am taking a class on long term technical project management which is helping to create the most functional layout; however, i am still struggling to gain support on how to apply for non-profit status with the government, how to apply for grants, and how to give community service hours to my growing team, as to give the some reward for the hardwork and many hours they invest into this organization.

HowDoWeChangeTheWorld.org is an organization designed to empower its users, as a source for information, support, and resources. The organization has only one objective, be a resource for all people, rich and poor, educated and uneducated. All you need is a internet connection and a pulse. we are here to help everyone come alive.

My ideal mentors would be Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, the two gentle men who created wikipedia.

I have decided to work on a project that will improve and make stronger the reading, writing, and communication skills on ESL (English as a Second Language), and ELD (English Language Development) students in high school. I am interested to provide to high school students the resources that they need to succeed in higher education. My main goal is that those students on ESL, and ELD reach their full potential, so that they pursuit higher education by going to UC and CSU colleges. Also, I think that is important to focus on ESL and ELD students because when they decide to go to college or community college they do not have the right tools to succeed in their education, as a result they end up dropping school. Although most of those students are immigrants and they may not have the resources at home to improve their English skills, they need a place in campus where they can go, ask for help, and interact with teachers and students that are outside of the ELS and ELD program. I think this is important because is an issue that affect ESL and ELD high school since they are not getting pre-college classes that help them to go to college. Also, they tend to be in the same English level until because they surrounded by students that are not native speakers, so that the chances to speak the language are few. Finally, it is important to focus on the ESL students from high school because they are the future of tomorrow.
My goals are to:
1. Identify the strengths from the ESL program at De Anza and share them with a local high school (Homestead High School) to improve the learning outcomes of ESL/ELD students.
2. Create a club/program with students and faculty that want to help ESL/ELD students to improve their English skills by put those skills in practice; it is important to create the connection with native speakers to provide the ESL/ELD students reach their potential.
3. Facilitate resources from De Anza ESL students to help the ELS/ELD students from high school to move forward in higher education.
I will like to work with people that has already experiences working with ESL students and that they already know their outcomes. For my next step I will start having meeting with faculty members and talk with them more deeply about my passion that will make an impact on the ESL students. The faculty members will have to collaborate with me and affording the ideas from De Anza and Homestead High School to combine the techniques to improve the ESL students’ skills in English. I really want to improve the outcomes that the students from Homestead High School because I was an ESL student, and as an ESL student I have limitations that did not let me go to a four year university. It is important that those students reach their full potential in their education so that they will be able to make changes and the difference in the American society.

My focus on improving the mental health services and resources at the school is sorely needed. In college, many students suffer from mild to acute mental disorders, and even if they don't, they are almost always stressed out. Here at De Anza we only have one personal counselor, for a student body of thousands. And you have to wait days and jump through hoops and fill out forms to even see that one counselor. This does not help in an emergency. It also turns off many students from seeking help at the school in the first place. Yet for many students, seeking help outside school isn't an option either.
I am concerned about getting manpower behind me to support and follow through on my ideas. It's not a one person job, and I can't find a currently existing student group or club that is focused on giving students at De Anza mental and emotional support. I'm also concerned about getting faculty support, especially from the counseling department. I obviously can't change anything about the counseling services at the school without their approval.
My ideal mentor would not only be familiar with the psychology of mental disorders, but how to deal with them on a day to day level. I find that many psychologists are unfamiliar with things like coping mechanisms, or how to talk someone down from a panic attack. While psychologists know the science behind mental disorders very well, I find the application of coping with them lacking. This kind of mentor (or mentors) would help with finding alternate and accessible resources for students, resources that work without hoop jumping.
